A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Lisa Thompson in Dublin in May

A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Lisa Thompson in Dublin earlier this year.Brian McHugh, with an address at Cairn Court, Poppintree in Ballymun, was remanded in custody for a week.

Mr McHugh was brought by detectives from Ballymun Garda Station before the Dublin District Court this afternoon to face a charge of murder. Ms Thompson, a mother of two young teenagers, was found dead at her home in Sandyhill Gardens in May. She had been attacked and stabbed several times.Detective Garda Nicola Duffy gave evidence of arrest charge and caution today.

She told the court that Brian McHugh was charged with the murder of Lisa Thompson before this afternoon's court sitting and made no reply to the charge.There was no application for bail as bail cannot be granted in the District Court in a murder case. Judge Treasa Kelly noted the case was not suitable for bail and granted Mr McHugh free legal aid after his solicitor, John Quinn, pointed out that Mr McHugh had no income. He was unemployed, he had no social welfare and Mr Quinn said that Mr McHugh was on remand and currently in custody.
