San Francisco's planning department told the couple that evidence shows the space has been used for parking since the 1950s, thus grandfathering it as legal.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A San Francisco couple who was threatened with a large fine for parking in their own driveway can now park there again.Recently, they got a $1,500 ticket from the City's planning department saying it's illegal to park in the front of a house, unless it's accompanied by a garage or cover.

It seemed so unfair. They'd been using their carpad for decades - when suddenly the city said it's illegal. Not only that, they were threatened with a $1,500 fine - a huge penalty even for San Francisco. The only way out? Go back into San Francisco history. But they could slip into their driveway and park on their carpad, which they'd been doing every day for the past 36 years."We got this email saying we can't park in the pad anymore. I said what, that's crazy," recounted Ed."It was very surprising, to say the least," said Judy.

"To all of a sudden to be told you can't use something that we could use for years. It's, it's startling. Inexplicable," Ed said.Testing SF's new BottleBank mobile recycling service reveals delayed payments, location scarcity

Go after corporations for revenue not an elderly couple

But let's no worry about the theft, sidewalk living and many poops spots in pier 39 lol.

good for them tbh

San Francisco is a total toilet

the fact this is even a news and all the conversation around this issue is madning.

About time SF did something right.

Did someone backtrack because of all that bad press?

Ridiculous.

I hate seeing a government bully private citizens like this into putting in so much of their resources to do something they have a right to do

1950s is 'historical'? there are people born in the 50s who are still living---are they 'historical' persons?

Your headlines doesn’t make sense with the story’s ending. The city still doesn’t allow them to park there without finding more evidence.

Yes…so happy for them.. thanks abc news

They should move to Oakland. Sidewalks are the new parking lots. All those blocked curb ramps. Parking Enforcement needs to be ramped up to be revenue producing self'supporting like in SF where some of that revenue supports Muni.

I can hear sfbike stomping their tires from the other side of the city in protest. Less room to illegally ride on the sidewalks.

Stupid Stupid Stupid...
