‘We will not go back’: Alabamians protest as abortion illegal in state after Roe v. Wade overturned

“It was like somebody punched me in the stomach,” said Kathy Brensinger at a demonstration early Friday evening in Five Points South in Birmingham. “I can’t believe that these liars on the Supreme Court had done this against the will of the American people.”

“This is what’s going to happen again. It’s going to happen again. This is just the beginning,” Brensinger said. “Women are going to die, and [the Supreme Court], it’s on their shoulders.” One protester spoke of how her mother, who worked at a Planned Parenthood, had to wear a bulletproof vest after abortion rights were upheld in a 1992 Supreme Court case.

“Thankfully I lived in a world where I had a choice whether to live with the worst night of my life for the rest of my life,” Longlois said. “No one should be forced to have the rest of their life be the result of the worst night of their life.”“We are literally sentencing people .. to death. If this was about life, we would be investing in maternal health care,” he said.

“This means a lot for me personally and it means a lot for our community,” Crowe said, adding that the clinic will remain in the community “until we absolutely can’t be.”Travis Jackson, an abortion activist who escorts women to the clinic, led the protesters in chants of “Abortion is Healthcare” and “We Ain’t Going Nowhere.”
