Rustenburg, Polokwane and Mangaung will be the first cities in South Africa to trial the country’s new integrated ticketing system, says transport minister Fikile Mbalula.
The idea of a single-ticket system was first mooted in 2017, while a similar system was trialled in Pretoria by Santaco for minibus taxi commuters in 2016. That project enabled commuters on the Johannesburg, Pretoria and Mabopane route to use a single card to pay for all their transactions. This shift is necessary to deliver a public transport system that is responsive to the needs of the people, Mbalula said in his May budget speech.
