Around 4,000 Scots are estimated to have been accused of the crime, which was in law until 1736, with around 85% of those convicted being women.

Campaigners have been fighting to secure a legal pardon for around 200 years for the approximately 2,500 people convicted of breaking the law.Accused of witchcraft by her brother King James V, as part of a vendetta against his family, she was arrested on trumped up charges. People close to her were tortured to extract"evidence" and on 17 July 1537 Janet was burned alive on Castle Hill, Edinburgh, with her young son forced to watch.

"It was a powerful and incredibly important first step in righting the historic wrong of 'witchcraft' accusations, arrests, and executions. "By issuing official pardons for all those convicted of witchcraft, we will be sending a strong message to the wide world - some parts of which, women still face prosecution for being accused of witchcraft - that Scotland recognises what happened to these people as a deplorable miscarriage of justice.

You don't hear of witchcraft believers causing death, conflict, war and suchlike, that is down to those who believe in any sort of God and different religious beliefs normally! Funny thing that isn't it!

Bit late for this ,its the fault of imported religious nutters who caused this and they should be deported and all religious cults churches cathedrals the lot should be bulldozed and real homes built .yes religion unless pagen is all imported ,we don't need middle east rubbish .

What a waste of tax payer money. It is ancient history, just let it alone. Those persecuted aren't going to benefit from it.

250 year old Witches adapting to that new gen life

Long overdue but their descendants must be compensated.

Scottish Government Announces pardon and………literally nothing changes. All sensible people say sarcastically together “well that was a hugely successful endeavour, and not a complete waste of tax payers money at all.”

The killing of Witches was just part of the inquisition which was just a power grab by the catholic church! Children living through such events and children brought up being taught history by evil people see evil as normal! Our world is normal, right?

I’m sure they will be delighted

What a stupid post.

Can we just apologise for everything that’s ever happened and draw a line under it and move on? Yours sincerely B Johnson

Good.

💼🐶

Are we in 1715 or something?

Ahh yes seems legit. Nothing to see here

Sure, cause a new witch hunt has arrived - don't you dare to misgender new saints!

After the Scots are pardoned, maybe it’s time to convict Nancy Pelosi.
