UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor made the call as Karapatan national officers are set to take the witness stand on Monday in the perjury case filed by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. against the group.

“The perjury case brought by the government may also be a form of retaliation for the human rights activities of these local Human Rights Defenders,” Lawlor said.

On Sunday, Karapatan said the case was filed after their officers as well as those of Gabriela and Rural Missionaries of the Philippines included Esperon as respondent in a petition for the writs of amparo and habeas corpus. Two witnesses who were to testify in relation to Karapatan’s petition, Ryan Hubilla and Zara Alvarez, were killed in June 2019 and August 2020 respectively, Lawlor said.
