Phil Mickelson hits from the 12th tee during the opening round of the LIV Golf Invitational at The Centurion Club on Thursday, June 9, 2022, in St. Albans, England. As much as some try to dance around it — acting like professional sports are kids games, when we know darn well they are not — money talks.

Greg Norman partnered with Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf to start a golf series that they claim isn’t a PGA Tour competitor, but clearly it is. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan sent a biting letter to Tour members announcing the suspensions Thursday. There is no way possible to get a positive return moneywise on a $200 million deal with Mickelson, who turns 52 next week. The PGA Tour has already won the PR battle by portraying the LIV money as dirty money and the players taking it are somehow of lesser character than the rich players who have chosen to remain with the Tour.
