Talk of a four-day week in the UK has accelerated since the COVID pandemic, though Labour did pledge to introduce it within a decade had Jeremy Corbyn led the party to victory in the 2019 general election.

A four-day week with no loss of pay is being trialled at dozens of companies across the UK from today.

Firms from a variety of industries are taking part, including banking, hospitality, care, and even animation studios. They will still give their workers 100% of their pay, on the understanding that they maintain maximum productivity. It's being billed as the biggest four-day week pilot to take place anywhere in the world, and organisers are working alongside university researchers who will measure the impact on productivity and the wellbeing of staff.Juliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College, and lead researcher on the pilot, said:"The four-day week is generally considered to be a triple dividend policy - helping employees, companies, and the climate.

Hey, if it works for people, I won't argue.

Anyone who reacts negatively to this is miserable BAD. Henry Ford introduced the 40 hour working week almost 100 years ago but so much has changed since then. Surely we should welcome changes that make sense for our current needs and lifestyles?

Not boomers arguing for a 5 day week in the comments. Find some shame pls!

These comments… British people are absolutely COMMITTED to their own misery 🙃🙃

It is essential that schools follow suit. High school students would greatly benefit from a four-day week to promote the digestion of learning, independent learning, and well-being. Both teachers and students would stand a better chance of keeping on top of workload.

If you work more efficiently, you will be able to maintain the same products even if you work four days a week.😃

It's all about staff numbers and the type of business. It may work for office style jobs but manufacturing, hospitality, leisure etc will need to either fund extra employees or overtime to cover and end up paying more. Do we dare mentthe NHS and blue light employees?.

So 4 on 3 off I’m sure this has been done already but I could be wrong 😂

The UK where 70% of the workforce are lazy

Until firms get greedy and think they'll make more profit if you work 5 days (or more).

Is that 4 day week the same hours as a 5 day week?

Wonder what elonmusk would say.

A lot of companies have done this for years! Works if you have the staff numbers

The slackers

More family time is always great. But that pic of the 'office' reminds me of why I don't work in one.

Great news. Tories stuck in the past will be very upset when they see productivity and mental health/wellbeing is up too.

Sounds good, what's the catch ?

one of the worst ideas ever
