FILE - This Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 file photo shows the headquarters of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tenn. Leaders of the SBC, America's largest Protestant denomination, stonewalled and denigrated survivors of clergy sex abuse over almost two decades while seeking to protect their own reputations, according to a scathing 288-page investigative report issued Sunday, May 22, 2022.
In addition, the committee pledged another $500,000 toward eliminating incidents of racial discrimination among churches. At least one member of the committee during the meeting publicly expressed fear that the potential legal fallout from the report and the cases documented could doom the 177-year-old convention.
“When we start targeting individual sins to protect a certain class, and we don’t succeed - which we will not - I just fear we are treading into an area that is potentially, absolutely devastating to our entire mission.” The action comes a week after a 288-page independent report which detailed how the leadership of the Southern Baptist Convention stonewalled attempts to investigate allegations of clergy sex abuse for 20 years, while denigrating those who reported incidents or wanted answers.
There's some real gems in this article: 'women and children are going to be victimized no matter how much and that is going to make us potentially targets of great class action lawsuits, which could be the end of the Southern Baptist Convention”
