Rosie DiManno: Supreme Court ruling devalues lives of most of mosque shooter’s victims

If cruel and unusual punishment were defined as beyond what is normal or natural, then that is the life sentence exacted from those who’ve lost their most beloved to an act of wanton violence.Like the 19 schoolchildren and two children massacred in Texas last week. Or the six Muslim worshippers slaughtered at a Quebec City mosque in 2017.

Terrorists. Bissonnette. Alek Minassian, who deliberately targeted pedestrians with the rental van that he pinballed down Yonge Street, killing 10 and injury 16 — his sentencing upon conviction of first-degree murder and attempted murder having been on hold, while the trial judge awaited the top court’s ruling.

Eligibility for parole is not a right to parole, to be clear. That hasn’t changed. The parole board can still withhold release, even for those not designated dangerous offenders. “This punishment is, by its very nature, intrinsically incompatible with human dignity,” wrote Wagner. “It is degrading in nature in that it presupposes at the time of its imposition that the offender is beyond redemption and lacks the moral autonomy needed for rehabilitation.”The Supreme Court’s decision was unanimous, a 9-0 concordant meeting of the wisest judicial minds in Canada.

Duelling appeals, a finding of judge’s error for the 40-year sentence by the Quebec Court of Appeal, and further appeal by the province’s attorney-general, who was actually seeking a 50-year sentence brought the matter to the Supremes. The 92-page decision throws a purely rhetorical sop to the relatives of Bissonnette’s victims, claiming 25-year parole ineligibility “must not be seen as devaluing the life of each victim.

The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees every Canadian the opportunity to apply for parole. People who are upset with the Supreme Court's decision should make the case to change the charter. Besides, just cuz he's eligible after 25 yrs, doesn't mean he'll get out.

Trudos Supreme Court appointed nut bars — there u go - feast now liberals - on liberalism

We need a new Supreme Court . Life sentence should be life without parole

When a person knowingly and intentionally takes the lives of innocent strangers, he should have to forfeit his life.,, permanently. Rehabilitation should not be a possibility. Saying “I’m sorry. I won’t do it again” is not acceptable.

SCC's message to murderers: 'Kill as many as you want. If you're going to kill 1, you might as well kill 20! 'Cause we're only going to make you pay for 1. The rest are FREEBIES! Enjoy.' Bang, bang, shoot, shoot.

Welcome to Canada, this is what we have

The Supreme Court's ruling devalued the lives of all Canadians just a little bit more, another small step towards making a person's murder socially acceptable

It’s most indubitably time to bring back the death penalty/capital punishment to Canada/Canadian Law! mizzionpozzible Overdo5e5tudiO5 PSSSSCK_Law2022
