Breaking: The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that the gunman who killed six people in a Quebec City mosque cannot wait more than 25 years before being eligible for parole.

Nine justices with the Supreme Court of Canada examined the case of Alexandre Bissonnette, the gunman who killed six worshippers and injured six others at a mosque in Quebec City in 2017.

Crown prosecutors had asked the country's top court to impose a 50-year wait for parole eligibility on Bissonnette. A sentencing provision introduced in 2011 gave judges discretionary powers to hand out consecutive, 25-year blocks of parole ineligibility periods for multiple first-degree murders. Six men died in the attack on the Quebec Mosque. They are, clockwise from top left, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Azzeddine Soufiane, Abdelkrim Hassane, Ibrahima Barry, Aboubaker Thabti and Khaled Belkacemi.

Montreal Because in Canada our system is based on, not only punishment, but redemption. Yup I used the religious word because so many 'pretend Christians' are against actual redemption.

Montreal And of the people slaughtered what of their cruel and unusual deaths….one wonders why we have such laws sometimes that protect the criminal

Why is parole an option for mass murderers I understand the fell on tuff times rob a bank and killed someone in the process And mybe even i drove drunk and killed a family of 3 But someone who shoots up a place of worship and kills people should never now what freedom is like

He won’t get it so it doesn’t matter.

like giving life sentences to loved ones of the 6 murdered citizens in cold blood is not a 'cruel' punishment...

Wow another brilliant decision by the SC of Canada. Wtf is wrong with these justices? I know it doesn’t mean these criminals will be let out but the chance is there. It should never be!

Outrageous!

He has the right to ask for parole after 25 years, but nothing says that it will be granted. See 'Paul Bernardo'.

Perhaps a good time to use Section 33. The SCC is not the final arbiter of such matters. If Canadians want such select few multiple 1st degree murderers to never again have a chance outside the prison walls, it is totally within the Liberal Government’s power to do that.

Consecutive life sentences was Conservative virtue signalling at its worst. The only way that guy is getting out is in a box on a forklift because they won't be able to find six people willing to carry it.

The guy planned & killed 6 innocent people and we're saying more than 25 years is cruel? On what basis does the court think that there is possibility of him to be rehabilitated in 25 years? That is only 20 years from now and he will only be 52 years old, and able to preach hate

Seems SCC decided that consecutive 50 years is too much. Says 26-49 to be decided. Maybe govt can change law to 35 years & argue that is reasonable cuz facts involving mass murderers justify the longer wait.

Swift death penalty for mass killers. Stop wasting time, resources, money, emotional bandwidth and attention on men who knowingly and lustfully revoke the right to society & life. They wrought death on innocents. Performative mercy is selfish, sends broken message to all who see.

So sad a severely mentally ill person went ballistic on innocent people. I wonder what this man's family / friends knew about his state of mind? SupportMentalHealth

I've never been so happy, OMG i make huge profits on my investment with Mrs Brenda Enright, her trading strategies are top notch occupied with little commission she charges on her trades. cryptobrenda8

Good. It was a unanimous decision. This reverts Canada back to the norm in other functioning western liberal democracies. The US is an outlier; frankly, it's not a functioning democracy. Eligibility doesn't mean they automatically get out. They just get a hearing. That's it.

Time to reform our SCC. These old folks are completely out of touch with reality. They are appointed. They can be removed from office by parliament. If this is the best reasoned judgement that they can pronounce then time to remove them all and start over. Absolutely appalling!

The most heinous, Scarborough rapist has had many chances for parole...he's still locked up

Mr .Edward Harrison Homolka did because she cut a deal before they found the evidence. Otherwise she woukd of done big time too

More liberal nonsense. The Trudeau-era of everybody being a victim, even apparently mass murderers. We reap what we sow.

24 years, 11 months and 30 days

Then we need to start giving consecutive sentences- one for each life lost- no more concurrent!

😢😢😢😢

Makes ine wonder about the rights of the victims and their loved ones.A gutless Supreme Court decision.

For those who think our system will not grant a mass murderer parole but will keep them locked up,consider Denis Lortie: attacked the Que. Nat. Assembly in 1984,&shot 3 people dead.Guilty of of 2nd-degree murder, he was granted full parole in 1996, just 12 yrs after the murders!

Bissonnette killed 6. The SCC's message to would-be mass murderers is: 'Kill as many as you want! If you're going to kill 1, you might as well kill 20, 'cause we'll only make you pay for 1. The rest are FREEBIES! Enjoy.' Bang, bang, shoot, shoot!

Supreme Court should think about the fact that what he did was cruel and unusual

Lefties get aroused by felons

Like Paul Bernardo, the shooter is allowed to have a *hearing*. He'll never actually get granted parole.

We laugh at the USA Supreme Court yet we are no better at times. Once again the law wishes longer sentences for steeling a chocolate Bar the killing room full of citizens

Outrageous

He should never be let out of jail. No compromise!

Until we introduce the death penalty for special criminals like him, our current laws and system can never properly punish this kind of evil.

Why waste money for a hearing. Jail for life, except he gets better treatment than our homeless or seniors

👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Time to bring back capital punishment period !

Death penalty for mass murderers ain’t immoral.

In Canada you can rape someone if your drunk and if you kill a whole bunch of people we will let you walk free

That's all you get for killing 6 people? 25 years? I would think killing six people means you stay in for good. 25 years is a life though so it's not like he's getting off easy. Not sure why but one assumes 6 people means they throw away the key.

Eligible for parole doesn't mean he'll get it. The Manson killers and Sirhan-Sirhan were eligible for parole decades ago but are still eating prison chow. (Those that aren't dead)

What about the rights of the victims families who now must attend parole hearings and re-live the horror for the rest of their lives

What a complete joke

They will just let him out for good behaviour and promises not to do it again.

put him on a waiting list, everything else has a waiting list.

Everybody needs to calm down. This doesn’t mean he’s getting out. It just means he gets a hearing. That’s it. He’ll never see the light of day.

The Supreme Court is now in the business of virtue signaling rather than the rule of law.

These people should not even be alive, muchless up for parole. What is the point of this so-called justice other than to torment the families of the murdered indefinitely.

Future murders committed by these offenders are on this judge. Bad decision.

All please keep in mind that just because you were up for parole in 25 years doesn’t mean you will get out in fact quite a few don’t if you are designated as a dangerous offender

The Supreme Court in Canada is so full of shit, Those people don’t deserve a second chance at life after committing something so cruel and inhuman. This country is such a joke when it comes to punishments…

These killers do not deserve a chance at being reintegrated into society at any point. Period.

Bullshit QuebecSucks

Corrective action: Bring back the death penalty. Why must Canadians pay to house and feed this killer and eventually let him free, again? WTF? The death penalty makes sense. cndpoli CanadianJustice deathpenalty

Bull 💩

25 years for killing 6 people? Better not happen.

DavidWCochrane What's 'cruel and unusual punishment' are the deaths of those 6 people and permanent losses to their families. Mass shootings and hate crimes should not be given any leniency.

Wow seems our Supreme Court has made many controversial decisions lately.

This will also apply to Minassian’s sentencing. Not a good decision.

What an absolute Joke!! This is a hate crime and he should never see the light of day again or have that opport. We need to get harsher on crimes in this Country. Punishment is suppose to act as a DETERRENT, thus some form of Justice for Vic’s & their families. 👎 🇨🇦 ⚖️

Should bring in death penalty

Chance at parole at 25 years is not the same as being released in 25 years. Just before the tiresome & predictable comments start.

Sad Canada.

Incredibly sickening.

“Court found parole ineligibility periods of 50 years or more were 'cruel and unusual' punishment” I hate this stupid f*cking country when it comes to law. This piece of shit shouldn’t see anymore than an hour of daylight per day and never have the slightest chance of parole.

No one gets out after 25, on their first attempt for murder. Nonetheless, multiple murders. He will rot in there, as he should.

Slow clap

LPC operative

To even have the possibility of parole is insane. Canada is soft as butter

Just keep adding to the clown show 👍

Wait, what?

Friday's decision was unanimous, with all nine judges dismissing the Crown's appeal and agreeing that 'not only do such punishments bring the administration of justice into disrepute, but they are cruel and unusual by nature.' Killing six people is cruel and unusual, judges. 💔

I have a feeling this shooter works for the liberal party of Canada

Bring back the death penalty

SCC= Soft on Crime Court

Lets go Brandeau!

Haha.

Canadian judges are about to get a taste of 'protesting' Americana leftwing style.

First the intoxication ruling, now this. The Supreme Court is ruining this great country.

he should have waited less that 10 minutes before the firing squad
