Former Supreme Court Justice Louise Arbour has provided National Defence with a copy of her review of sexual misconduct in the ranks.

Former Supreme Court Justice Louise Arbour has provided National Defence with a copy of her long-awaited review of sexual misconduct in the ranks. The review, requested by the department, is expected to be released to the public by May 30.One senior retired officer told Arbour’s team that National Defence and the Canadian Forces typically respond to sexual misconduct allegations by trying to undercut victims and protect the senior leadership.

“The victim is too often left to feel like they aren’t just reporting a crime , but having to face the full weight of an institution playing defence first and foremost,” she added in her letter to Arbour. Cadieu has strenuously denied any wrongdoing and has said the allegations against him are false. “I know that these false claims will, as intended, create doubts about my ability to lead,” he added in a statement originally issued in October 2021 when news broke about the police investigation.

Some on-line postings have targeted the woman with claims she is mentally unstable. Military sources acknowledged to this newspaper that, in some meetings at National Defence headquarters, the woman’s allegations have been belittled and that her identity is known in some circles.Article content Retired Brig.-Gen. James Cox issued a supportive tweet Oct. 13, 2021, when news emerged that Cadieu was under police investigation. “Now LGen Trevor Cadieux has been accused of misconduct. I’m beginning to smell a rat,” tweeted Cox, a fellow at the Norman Paterson School at Carleton University. “This is getting into the realm of BS, or sedition to undermine national leadership.
