So people think it ok for gay people etc to be murdered & tortured because of their laws. I don't think so. Society has to condem them

As much as I believe this man to be innocent, questioning people about the security policies of a country such as the UAE is certain to arouse suspicion. People need to exercise caution when visiting countries with vastly different laws.

Am I the only one that finds his wife extremely annoying. She sounds delusionally righteous and selfish. A wife like her sounds like a proper life sentence

Let us see. Legal systems protect the systems, not necessarily some others.

See Frank Gardner’s analysis elsewhere. Why would we spy on a close ally?

If I read it right the Arabs had the audacity to hold a trial in THEIR country in Arabic - how dare they. Subject of the accused thesis would raise a few eyebrows if the reverse was the case in England

If he was not spying the government need to pull out all the stops to free him. If he was spying and therefore working for the government then the government need to pull out all the stops to free him.

Duh!

Remember the woman who had wine on an Emirates flight and was then arrested for drinking?

This man has been found guilty with no evidence except that the judge was told he had confessed. This process is called 'verballing' and is not accepted in any decent court. Why is the UAE doing this?

Meaning the UAE's Muslim system

I would not even enter this country with a tub of aspirin let alone going to do any kind of research there. Totally dumb now they want the country to bale them out.

Haven't you been reading the news?

What's wrong with convicting a spy for spying? Where's the proof that he's not a spy? Just because UAE is not a western country, doesn't mean you can just go there, break laws then complain about the legal system when you are caught. Hope they carry out the sentence fully.

When anyone goes to other countries you need to respect there ways / Laws , you only got t look on Internet to see what’s what in a country . Going in there researching there security was very in wise

This is disgraceful racism

The dangers of probing areas of security in some Middle East countries, as was planned by this chap was known to him and his University before he departed. We cannot expect our Government to go out on a limb when people undertake activities that the Government warn against.

Because it's so primitive it's medieval?

Andym6769 Do you need an answer?🙄

Why was he there, what was he really doing?

Because it UK can not influence the decision making process...

Quick simply we should cut ties with UAE uaebut wo nt because of greed.

people in glass houses

I can’t be the the only one thinking that “researching the country's security strategy for a PhD” is the lamest excuse ever for “a big fuckload of spying” 🤔

Didn't he research on how secretive they are over there? Although I hope he does come home.

Where is the proof that this guy was an academic and not an intelligence operative?

Because it’s shit ...nothing more

There was no court hearing. They are used to persecuting people.

Because it's not soft like UK

Just think if Jimmy Saville had been arrested in Thailand fixing it for little children the bbC would go well out of its way to defend him. What am I saying they did that in the UK.

Er.... because it is a horrendous dictatorship who use tools like Man City to show how ‘kind’ they are...

Sharia

Because you disagree with it?

The UAE has a legal system?

Ive no idea whatsoever

British academic Matthew Hedges 'shook with fear' at UAE life sentence, wife saysDaniela Tejada accuses the UK of putting international relations ahead of her husband's rights and not taking his case seriously. I dread to think that this could happen to any one of us. But what to do is another thing. I just hope that this evil gvt is prepared to do the right thing this time considering they have failed that mother in an Iran prison. Shouldn’t of gone messing round over there then should he, get what you deserve sometimes, we know what their human rights record is like And no doubt he’s still shaking like a shitting dog
