More than 1,000 lawyers in Ontario have signed a petition to make all court appearances 'presumptively virtual unless parties and their counsel agree otherwise.'

The pandemic forced millions of court proceeding to go virtual over the past two years, a necessity in order to keep the wheels of justice moving.More than 1,000 lawyers have signed a petition to make all court appearances “presumptively virtual unless parties and their counsel agree otherwise.”

The lawyers argue that remote court saves them time, which reduces their clients’ bills, while improving access to justice for those with disabilities or other barriers to in-person meetings. As COVID-19 restrictions in courthouses have started to lift across the country, many judges are left to decide on a case-by-case basis if proceedings are held in-person, remote or hybrid.Criminal defence lawyer Michael Spratt saidwhile there are merits to remote court appearances, some lower-income clients will be at a disadvantage if virtual becomes the default setting.

Currently, major backlogs at Ontario’s Landlord Tenant Board means disputes can be stretched out for months or even years due to the delays in getting a hearing.

Of course they would. It means they can work from cottages while those who can’t afford wifi and computers are left out. Access to justice will suffer but gosh let’s not inconvenience Bay Street…..Lawyers ontariocourts

Shouldn’t be default but it definitely sounds like a great idea. The court system in ontario is flawed, delays, wait times too long.

They don't take the vaccine because they are antivaxxers but they want the perk of staying home

And I was put on trial and I was defending myself and then a prison guard broke my nose then when I was brought to the court house behind it I was beaten by the four vehicle employees. And then I got to talking and any way I originated the number of 3.96485 and updated that.

The speculation of giving you what you want is under the treatment prisoners get treated cause when I was arrested I was held down until I can't breathe then I got chased because the police didn't have a right to force me to let him look in my bag and then I was arrested and...

Billable hours.

So it's all fine and dandy for children to be in MUCH smaller rooms with MANY more bodies in said room, but not for lawyers to go to work in person in LARGE spaces with fewer ppl? Wimps.

Lawyers are overpaid art students prone to overformalistic thinking with a monopoly on law that they have ruthlessly exploited for profit to the detriment of justice. Judges come from this broken cohort. There is no rule of law or justice in this pay-to-win theater.

Of course they would. It says them time and adds more money to their bank account. Doctors are doing the same thing. In person is always the better option.

Agree. Saves a lot of time and money.

They should also make records public. Takes way too much effort to find what happened at a trial or hearing in Ontario.

I agree with this article and I invented the technology it's all on the stock market or in free to download relying on the agreements for use. Do you ever look at the sun and see it give off it's heat warmth for so many that I believe in the same thing.

One day everything will be done virtually ,just like those dystopian movies we've all seen..its so unreal at times, we went from a normal society, nothing like the Jetsons we all imagined as children, no flying cars for us, to a Big Pharma Dystopian controlled society..

We should do way more things remotely. One of the best things to come out of the pandemic was remote work and meetings. Also good given high gas prices (not that lawyers don't have money). Good for the environment as well.

Disgrace!!

good idea!
