MTA Bridges and Tunnels president Daniel DeCrescenzo holds up a plastic screen used to obscure license platesMTA Bridges and Tunnels president Daniel DeCrescenzo holds up a plastic screen used to obscure license platesThe MTA and Port Authority are teaming up with regional law enforcement officials to crack down on the scourge of toll evasion.
“You don’t want to get caught, because you are going to get caught,” Danny DeCrescenzo, president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels, warned. “You might get caught at one of our facilities. You might get caught in the streets from NYPD. You might get caught at a Port Authority Facility from the Port Authority Police. The sheriff’s office might be behind you lighting up, or you might get pulled over by a state trooper.
NYPD Deputy Inspector Conor Wynne noted there was often a connection between people who use fraudulent license plates and other crimes. Drivers will use these vehicles as getaway cars after robberies, or worse, he said. MTA Chairman Janno Lieber said toll evasion is also theft of money the agency needs to cover operating expenses. The MTA’s $18.5 billion budget relies on fares and tolls to cover half its operating costs.
Why don’t we start with the thousands of vehicles (motorcycles, mini bikes, scooters, etc) that don’t have plates at all? Stand on any corner in Manhattan and you’ll see dozens within a few minutes. Instead of picking/choosing, why not enforce all of the rules?
Hope some of that includes cracking down on the massive amount of fake temporary license plates on cars these days...
Do placard abuse and parking in the middle of the street next!
This should include insurance fraud too - drivers who live exclusively in NY shouldn’t have Florida plates. These are the same guys who also obstruct their plates and drive like assholes.
They can start outside literally any station house in the city.
How about instead of driver tolls going towards mass transit it instead goes towards the bridges, tunnels and roads. Then the fares that mass transit users pays goes towards mass transit. Why should I pay for mass transit when I don't use it and why should a subway pay for my road?
MTA & NYPD officers are the worst offenders. The only solution to this is allowing citizen enforcement via 311 complaints requiring pics, that are not passed on to NYPD, but instead generate automatic suspension of the license of the person the car is registered to, & a DMV fine.
If they actually want this to work, they need to start seizing cars, and refuse to release them until the cars are properly registered. This should also go for cars that they find parked on the street. If you can’t tell already, I basically assume nothing will change.
How about they lower the tolls I mean almost $25 for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and your still in bumper to bumper most days is enough for people to skip the toll since I'm seeing no value for my money
MTA & law enforcement are the worst offenders 😂
