Former Logan mayor Luke Smith will stand trial on a single official corruption offence more than four years after he was charged by the state’s corruption watchdog.
Smith will stand trial on one count of official corruption on March 6, 2023. However, if the jury finds him not guilty of official corruption, the indictment also carries an alternative charge of receiving a secret commission that the jury can find him guilty of instead.The trial is expected to run for two to three weeks and Smith will be represented by Jeffrey Hunter - a highly experienced barrister who was formerly a crown prosecutor.
Crown prosecutor Mark Green told the court the charge details, witness lists and evidence exhibits were handed over to Smith’s defence team on Monday. The state’s corruption watchdog had held a series of public hearings in 2017 exploring the conduct of councillors from several south-east Queensland councils.
