The turnout at Tuesday’s protest at Foley Square, in lower Manhattan, showed the reality that reproductive rights are personal and cross-generational.

Last Tuesday afternoon, less than twenty-four hours after a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion indicated that the fight to protect Roe v. Wade would soon suffer an epochal defeat, New Yorkers began showing up at Foley Square, in lower Manhattan. “.” The threat to Roe had been a slow build, but the suddenness of the leak meant that the protest was marked by improvisation.

“It’s scary that something we relied on for fifty years can be taken away,” a law student named Savannah, who held a drawing of a coat hanger, said. Although demonstrators knew that the fall of Roe was unlikely to impinge on abortion rights in New York State, that was little comfort.

But the reality of reproductive rights wasn’t just hypothetical; it was personal and cross-generational. In a group of four thirtysomething women, one had had an abortion and another had accompanied a friend to a clinic. Daniele, in a green turtleneck, had texted friends who play in a band with her , hoping, since the Supreme Court’s opinion was still a draft, that “if we really scare the shit out of them they’ll change their minds.

Nearby, a man named Jonathan Walker wore a pink pussyhat, from the 2017 Women’s March. “My wife couldn’t be here. I’m wearing her hat,” he said. Both are actors; his wife was doing a Zoom reading of a Charles Busch play. Walker’s grandmother volunteered for the birth-control advocate Margaret Sanger a hundred years ago, and when he was a teen-ager, in the seventies, his mother had an abortion. “She was fifty-three years old. It was unviable,” he said.

Protests will not change their minds.

Let’s be sure to contrast these peaceful protests with the bombings and killings perpetrated by anti-abortion mobs. Don’t let the RWM own who’s a ‘mob’ here, and perpetuate their ‘pro-life’ lie.

Maybe ppl should vote…

Or embolden them

Why belittle like this? Why?

But ,it's all a diversion to distract us from Ginny Thomas and the Jan 6 committee. She needs to go to jail and her husband needs to be impeached.

Can they pump antipsychotics into the air around there, too? These folks need help that screaming just won’t bring.

Devastated? Try showing up to vote in EVERY election.

InjusticeAmerica Aside from bigoted judges, Pence should be shouted down, also Con-way, who is right 'no one should tell woman what to do with her body' right 'white woman' esp corrupt judges who allow pro-life thugs to kill adults

Coordinated colors & garb, screaming, clever signs are no substitute for voting. These protestors today best be the voters in November.

Such a controversial topic and so personal but yet so important. New York is a leader, always has been always will be. I remember when pot made all the news on legalizing it or not. Wow! history repeats itself over & over. I am a Native New Yorker and proud of it!

look at my boobs😘

Wtf is this headline though?

Devastated that you won't be able to have elective abortions? Don't worry, there are a plenty of states which allow you to completely demoralize humanity with an act of violence to suit your sensibilities of having regular sex without bearing any responsibility.

Or better yet how about you go vote in a midterm. Screaming is dumb. Voting works.
