Maternal health is also expected to decline overall. One straightforward reason is that the risks of dying from pregnancy-related causes are much greater than the risks of dying because of a legal abortion. A predicted rise in maternal mortality among Black women in the United States is particularly distressing, because the rate is already unacceptably high.
Abortion bans will extract an unequal toll on society. Some 75% of women who choose to have abortions are in a low income bracket and nearly 60% already have children, submitted ahead of the December hearing and signed by more than 150 economists. Travelling across state lines to receive care will be particularly difficult for people who do not have the funds for flights or the ability to take time off work, or who struggle to find childcare.
Such an attitude suggests that the justices see research as secondary to the question of whether the US Constitution should protect abortion. But the outcome of this ruling isn’t an academic puzzle. The Supreme Court needs to accept that the consensus of research, knowledge and scholarship — the evidence on which societies must base their laws — shows how real lives hang in the balance.
Over 62,000,000 Americans slaughtered since 1973 is still not enough for you?
Thank you for factual information. As this issue heats up, it's notable how 'prolife' people don't argue from a position of data, just emotion. The awful thing is they end up harming women and children, even though they claim the opposite. I hope some read this & start to think.
It’s not healthcare
We all have control over our own bodies. Choices to make. We have all made mistakes and can be forgiven. I go with a life is a life and God always has a plan. As we get older, things look very different.
Can the morality of nature be found from within it?
If there is one thing that the abortion debate has clarified it is that there are different opinions about when human life begins. Science can describe the biology and chemistry but is fuzzy on the definition of life and really has nothing to say about when human life begins.
I think what these conservative justices are saying it that even if access to abortion is good health policy it doesn’t matter because it isn’t for them to decide. It is the job of the states.
The Supreme Court does not care about the harm. They do not care about health care. They care about power and control.
I guess I'm no longer following Nature. I thought they were better than this.
Trust the science - abortion ends a life
They just have philosophical differences. You know.
This is political rhetoric, regardless of if you are for or against it, it is not the job of a science journal to weigh in on the culture war.
Unless you're talking about the healthcare of the child being killed, sure.
