Who Are the Best Lawyers? There’s Litigation About That

In a country with more than a million licensed lawyers, it isn’t easy to distinguish the best among them. There’s no gold-dipped Oscar statuette or Olympic medal awarded to attorneys. Instead, validation often takes the form of small wooden plaques, which are plastered all over the office walls and websites of the legal profession.

Washingtonian magazine found itself in federal court this spring after publishing a directory of the “Best Lawyers” practicing in the nation’s capital. A Georgia-based company called Best Lawyers, which rates attorneys based on peer reviews, sued the magazine for trademark infringement. Steve Fischer, an elected director of the State Bar of Texas, tested the legitimacy of an Orlando, Fla.-based outfit called “Lawyers of Distinction” with the aid of his dog, a 10-year-old pooch named Shasharoosticus, whom Mr. Fischer nominated for an award.As a canine, Shasharoosticus—or S. Roosticus Fischer, as Mr. Fischer referred to the dog in his nomination entry—lacked a law degree and a license to practice. That didn’t stop “Lawyers of Distinction” from accepting Mr. Fischer’s nomination.

“We have grown and learned from these mistakes and matured quite a bit as an organization as a result,” said Robert B. Baker, chief executive of the company. “Anybody who is trying to sell you a plaque, for me that’s absolutely a red flag,” said Amanda Loesch, a marketer at Porzio, Bromberg & Newman P.C., a New Jersey law firm. “Some people don’t particularly care. They say any publicity is good publicity.”

Michael S. Lamonsoff, a Manhattan personal injury lawyer, has an awards section on his firm’s website. He has received honors from the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys, American Association of Attorneys Advocates and the American Institute of Trial Lawyers.
