Reacting to the leaked document, Senate Democrats are aiming to put forward a bill that will codify abortion rights into law later this week.It came after Democratic senator Bernie Sanders called for people to act"now" to"pass legislation that codifies Roe v Wade as the law of the land".

In a joint statement, former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle said the Supreme Court's potential decision would be"unlikely" to reduce abortions and would drive women to seek out illegal, dangerous procedures instead. "The disgraceful statements by President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and Leader Schumer refuse to defend judicial independence and the rule of law and instead play into this toxic spectacle," he said.
