Free State police have arrested the alleged mastermind behind the murder of an ANC member, who was a candidate councillor when he was shot dead last year.

Free State police arrested the alleged mastermind behind the murder of an ANC member.Two hitmen, and the alleged mastermind were arrested for the murder of ward councillor Piet Moletsane, 29.

Moletsane was shot dead in 2021 by two hitmen aged between 32 and 34 while leaving the tavern he worked for. The gunmen the alleged mastermind hired were arrested in January and the man - who is a former councillor in one of the wards in the Free State - was arrested on Monday. Free State police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said Piet Moletsane was gunned down by two hitmen aged 32 and 34 on 23 September 2021, while leaving the tavern where he worked."The two [hitmen] were successfully traced and arrested on 28 January 2022 and remain in custody.Further intensive investigations led to the arrest of a 44-year-old man who was allegedly linked as the mastermind in the murder that happened back in 2021.

"On Monday, around 18:30, a 44-year-old former councillor was arrested after he was linked to the murder of ANC member Piet Moletsane, who at the time of the murder was active in politics and was a candidate councillor for Ward 4 in Meloding.The alleged mastermind will appear in court on Wednesday while the other two accused will remain in custody.
