Sheriff Christopher Paul Viland retired Friday, Cuyahoga County spokeswoman Mary Louise Madigan confirmed.

“We thank him for dedicating himself to public service, supporting, growing and training staff and working tirelessly to improve the jail,” Madigan said in a statement. “He will stay with us through the end of the month to ensure a seamless transition.”

Viland was appointed by Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish in January 2021 and confirmed by Cuyahoga County Council in March 2021. Before becoming sheriff, Viland served as police inspector general for Cleveland’s Department of Public Safety. He also served with the Solon Police Department from 1987 to 2019, working in various roles from patrol officer, detective, patrol sergeant, patrol lieutenant, detective lieutenant and chief.

Viland was the third permanent sheriff since Budish took office in 2015. He replaced former Sheriff Cliff Pinkney, who resigned in August 2019.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
