Italy's highest court has ruled that children born to Italian parents should take both surnames, calling the current practice 'discriminatory and harmful'.

Source:Italian children should be given the surname of both parents, the Constitutional Court said on Wednesday, overturning the tradition by which all newborns are automatically named after their father. The current practice is "discriminatory and harmful to the identity" of the child, the court said in a statement, adding that both parents should be able to choose the surname.

From now on, "the child takes the surname of both parents in the order agreed by them, unless they decide jointly to attribute only the surname of one of the two", the court said in a press statement.La Repubblica

Va bene..... Gino Cozzo sposa Maria Nero. Risultato, Primo Cozzo Nero. Nino de Lorenzo sposa Bianca Rossi. Idem, Sofia Rossi de Lorenzo. Primo sposa Sofia. I lori figli gemelli - Marco Cozzo Nero Rossi de Lorenzo, e Gemma Rossi de Lorenzo Cozzo Nero. Prossima generazione?

It doesn't mean that surnames are kept generation after generation. It means that it's illegal to give automatically the father's name to a child. The parents have now to stipulate whether the mother's or father's surname or both will be used.

In a couple of generations, surnames will be so long as to be unpronounceable

Weird. How about we let families decide

Why do you have a picture of the Pope? He's not even an Italian citizen. Irrelevant.
