Matilda Bogner, a Russian-speaking lawyer, heads a United Nations mission trying to sort fact from fiction in Ukraine.

A senior United Nations official says the extent of war crimes committed in Ukraine – in particular horrific acts of sexual violence by Russian troops – could take years to document amid an escalating civilian death toll from the bloody conflict.

“The scale of civilian deaths, along with the scale of other forms of violations, in what appears to be arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances and summary killings, indicate a high level of concern that there are war crimes being committed,” she said in an interview from a new temporary headquarters in western Ukraine.

Cemetery workers unload bodies of civilians killed in and around Bucha before they are transported to the morgue on April 7.She said the monitoring team has confirmed 125 cases of arbitrary detention or enforced disappearances – 102 men and 23 women from areas of conflict. Of that figure 34 have been released, three are confirmed dead and the rest are still missing.

She has voiced concerns about the torture and ill-treatment of people believed to be so-called marauders, bootleggers, pro-Russian supporters and curfew violators in territory controlled by the Ukraine government. She said both sides had likely mistreated prisoners of war. “We do believe there is sexual violence taking place. And usually, only after that, they will they feel safe and able to talk about their situation.
