Texas' social studies standards listed three causes for the Civil War: sectionalism, states' rights and slavery, in that order. Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, students will be taught that slavery played a 'central role.'

If only the antebellum Texas legislature had passed a “Declaration” staying the causes for their cessation? Oh wait...

It’s about damned time.

Seem out of order to me. Hmmm

While it's always fun to call out Texas on their crap, in this instance, it's just not Texas that doesn't know much about slavery in America, there are 49 other states that need a funkin' lesson, too. A lack of Black American History knowledge isn't just a issue in Texas AMJoy

Generally public schools in Texas suck.Excellent public schools exist, but they are really private schools masquerading as public schools. All excellent public schools are from wealthy areas. The poor areas provide poor educations, insuring students will remain financially poor.

Tristessette I hope they include the FACT that Texas waited eighteen months--until June 19, 1865-- to announce to slaves that they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation effective January 1, 1863.

Backwards TX. They just make it up as they stumble on.

Can we PLEASE stop continuing to highlight slavery storys, instead talk about blacks who fought as soldiers on the rebels side, or better yet stop them all together. They just breed arguments, and discontent. And those who stir this S_ _ T pot , should have to lick the spoon!

Texas also says that Moses was a founding father

If you wanna really see the whole thing unravel, when a person tells you the Civil War was about states' rights, sectionalism, or the economy, ask them *which* right. Or why sectionalists wanted the North to butt out of their affairs. Or the basis of the Southern economy.

Good to hear. Slavery was why the civil war was fought despite what southern revisionists like to pretend. Wish we’d just divided the country. Why do US citizens let TexAss decide what goes in our children’s text books. The right wing nutbags in that state are truly insane.

Ignorance grows in abundance in that state. Particularly in their so called government. CorruptAF

If they were teaching all three of them, why is this news?

xks2012 it wasn’t about freeing slaves for the north. it was about industrialization and capital. not about human sentiment.

Slavery was the sole reason.

Can’t erase history.

Seriously? I will never support that in my classroom- luckily I get to teach at the collegiate level. Texas, do better- our students deserve better (I.e. the truth)

Will they teach about Stalin or Mao and how communism kills? You know what I'm talking about NPR, you're an advocate 😉

dankrutka 150 years late.

It’s about God Damn time

They will change the history of our country until nobody knows what actually happened.

Living in and being from Texas I can see this not going over well anywhere outside of big cities. Most of the state and nation would prefer to believe what they want to believe regardless of facts.

Do they not already know this in Texas?

Many Texans still believe there are no rights to be had for descendants from slaves. They wear that badge proudly. They've used 'separate and not equal' as their battle cry no matter what the laws say.

Actually I don't 👍 like this idea & it's 👎 not good for our society . It can cause anger & violence can grow Student mind . Instead it will be good to show achievement . We had African American President .

I can't get over this. . . Words fail me! Such a liberal State like Texas...

Maybe schools should make use of reputable internet resources- at least until there's a legitimate, academic organization to review textbooks.

Lincoln was not originally in favor of abolition. Republicans were steadfastly against slavery spreading to the new territories. That was unacceptable to the South. They seceded. Slavery may not have been the reason all southerners fought, but it was the cause of the Civil War.

Well welcome to the 21st century

Slavery was a progressive policy. The problem with growing crops was manpower. Slavery fixed that. That was progress in those days. Democrat progress.

Congrats to Texas...welcome to the 21st century

Right wing ideology is the greatest threat to our society and democracy.

Well this explains some of it. I can't imagine Texas was the only state with this history.

Finally. Maybe they should remind them that sporting the Confederate flag is a sign of direct treason, too. They seem so quick to scream against taking a knee...

ABOUT TIME

barbs73 Read the Texas letter of secession from the Union. They were quite clear

Slavery did NOT play a central role... The war was, for Lincoln, the preservation of the Union... Slavery was NOT an issue until 1863... nearly 2 years after the war started... And the only reason was because the Union was losing the war & needed an excuse to continue the war!

Texas still on that bullshyt

It took them 153 years to realize this?

They should also be taught that Democrats are the ones who pushed to keep slaves, and there were no Republican slave owners at the time of the civil war. Dems also created the KKK

Please use the serial comma.

They should also state the role slavery played in the Texas Revolt against Mexico. Slavery was forbidden in Mexico which made cotton farming uneconimical.

nhdogmom Have they stopped referring to it as the War of Northern Aggression?

Slavery. Slavery. Slavery. States’ rights was not a concern of the South when Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act.

Sure the main cause is sectionalism when you recognize that the narrow interest IS SLAVERY!!!!!! and then states’ rights as justification. It’s a good thing I don’t teach in Texas, I’d probably be in Administrative leave once a month! ❤️

Yes, the Civil War was about slavery...

FINALLY!!!

Stephen Austin built Texas on slavery. Austin=Slavery austinslavery

Lincoln was not originally in favor of abolition. Republicans were steadfastly against slavery spreading to the new territories. That was unacceptable to the South. They succeeded. Slavery may not have been the reason all southerners fought, but it was the cause of the Civil War.

This is fair, since slavery was obviously the main states' rights issue, though Jefferson from an earlier era was concerned primarily with state sovereignty and suspicion of the federal judiciary & its liberal construction of the Constitution. ('liberal' in the strict sense)

It's sad that what is arguably our nations darkest history, is tiptoed around here in Texas.

Primary role The primary role

See 'Lost Cause' The ideology endorses the supposed virtues of the antebellum South, viewing the American Civil War as an honorable struggle for the Southern way of life while minimizing or denying the central role of slavery.

Better late than never...

You mean 'The War of Northern Aggression'?

AndyLally States rights is correct. States right to own slaves.

It is sad when we have to applaud that students will be taught the truth. That should be a given.

So we changing history again. States rights caused the civil war. Union was losing that's when the made abt slavery

This is basically a King of the Hill episode

It was all about slavery, states right to own human beings.

What a shit show! You’re finally getting your act together Texas

Fun slavery facts you still don't learn in school:

My civics teacher in HS (1998) taught the states rights angle as well. He conveniently left out that it was states rights to allow slavery.

That adding 'states' rights to retain slavery' to 'slavery' is literally unintelligible doesn't seem to have made any impression on the Board. How hard would it be to just TeachTheTruth ?

It’s outrageous that this even happened. The way we do (or don’t) memorialize history can directly affect the types of policies and laws within the state LALS172 LALS_Falcon

Finally....

Yeah well that's the truth so way to get on board with facts

Or you can just have kids read the original source material and not need to be fed narratives.
