Growing up on Chicago’s West Side, it was always made clear to Avalon Betts-Gaston how she should wear her hair.
“In my own safe space, I was able to embrace who I was, but when I walked out the door, I knew I had to put on another person,” said Betts-Gaston, 53. “Society wasn’t ready to embrace me even though I was ready to embrace myself.” The Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair — or CROWN — Act amends the Illinois Human Rights Act to make explicit that “race” includes associated traits such as hair texture and styles. The bill now awaits Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signature.“No one should have to miss out on a job opportunity or miss a school graduation because of the hair that grows naturally out of their head,” state Sen. Mattie Hunter, a Chicago Democrat and the bill’s sponsor, said in a statement. “It’s 2022.
“If it is wrong to judge by the color of one’s skin, isn’t it also wrong to judge by the way one styles their hair?” Hunter said.
this was aimed at Blk people, but it could effect whites too. I've seen whites with corn rows, dreads....IMO, all those extreme styles are no place for the workplace. Just wrap a scarf or turban around your head, or stay at home and work. Whole Foods is good for employing
What about Jada?
What a colossal waste of time and effort.
Going to be funny when the white guy shows up to work with dreads.
More Springfield symbolism.
What about the end to police brutality. Pass bill HB 1727!
Another meaningless, woke piece of garbage Illinois law that does nothing... Just like the safetyact
Ban and mandate. Ban and mandate. Authoritarian incompetents fiddle away and they can't even keep the streets safe.
I can’t even believe this is a thing. Good job Illinois.
