Former Perth barrister Lloyd Rayney fails to win a substantial increase to his $2.6 million payout after police called him the 'prime' and 'only' suspect in his wife's murder, with WA's highest court granting him another $160,000 in interest payments.

, Justice John Chaney ruled that the comments by Detective Lee "in their entirety bore the imputation that the plaintiff [Mr Rayney] murdered his wife".

Mr Rayney, who turned 60 this year, had been seeking as much as $10 million, arguing the defamatory comments had largely affected his income from the time they were made until his expected retirement age at 67, with the exception of four years when he gave an undertaking not to practise law. These included that he "engaged in discreditable conduct, including arranging for illegal telephone interception, making false declarations and deliberately giving false evidence to a court while on oath".Those findings ultimately led to Mr Rayney being struck off as a lawyer in 2020.
