The objection that streams and forests cannot have standing because streams and forests cannot speak was, in Stone’s view, easily addressed. “Corporations cannot speak either,” he observed. “Nor can states, estates, infants, incompetents, municipalities or universities.” And yet these entities were amply represented—some might say overrepresented—in the courts.

If corporations are people, why not nature?
Why not? A bunch of cells that may turn out to die and decay before being excreted or said cells may split into several protohumans and they are considered to have more rights than a real living woman. Why not a lake?

It’s such a western frame - it was put forward 1/2 a century ago in westerns law. Indigenous cultures and ways of knowing have seen “natural objects” as having “rights” for millennia - like since forever.
