Franchesca Ranger is one of many small landlords in Ontario who became homeless during the pandemic. Legal experts say they haven't seen this happen before.

Franchesca Ranger spent 1.5 years 'living out of a suitcase' because former tenant refused to leave.

Tldr: She wasn't actually homeless in the way that we use the word homeless. She stayed with friends and family while feuding with a shit tenant. The tenant may or may not have kept copius ammounts of peanut butter in a bathtub.

I suppose it's time for Franchesca to get a real job. Though given her propensity for living off other people's work and income, she'd probably just hop on welfare.

Lmao

All these people bitching about property rights is hilarious.

She wanted to evict a longtime tenant that paid his dues 100% before this pathetic excuse for a human being announced to him and his disabled spouse (that has all her health services near the appt) they would be kicked out in 75 days because she decided to be a horrible person.

Cool, do tenants next

This is crazy. These tenants are steeling from her, this is criminal of them. No one should be homeless and the government needs to step up to help them but they are wrong for staying and not paying rent.

damn, she should have gotten a job

You should of torched it, problem solved. Idiot governments everywhere today. What a joke Canada is today. Time to join the USA for cheaper taxes, food, alcohol and the NFL.

Sue your provincial govt for lost revenue, damages and stress - in the suit, include the names of your MP and Premier.

Maybe she shouldve gotten a job

Maybe she should learn to code.

Dang, maybe we should address the core of the housing crisis problem then.

Landlord tenant act needs to change.

Pro tip: don’t be a landlord

Sad article but hilarious comments

And the banks all got paid first. Whether through CERB or CERT, it went to rent, lease, or mortgage. The fucking banks made out like bandits with our tax dollars. And they’ll do it again when interest rates go up this week. Absolutely disgusting.

The government should protect the benefits of landlords. They should not just project the tenants by sacrificing the benefits of landlords.

Don't care.

Can you put 'Landlord' on a resume?

Isn't liberalism wonderful

And people wonder why so many don’t want to rent their properties. I left a apartment empty at my old house just not to have to deal with crap like this.

Qualifying for a mortgage and making poor people pay it off isn’t a job. Sorry your money machine broke.

CBC propaganda & Liberal policies directly to blame for the destruction of not just businesses but of all Canadian values. Shame defundcbc fakenews

I don't understand why the owner didn't sell her house ? If your tenant refuses to move out with the cost of relistate just sell.... sure u still don't have a house but atleast u aren't carrying a mortgage....

Maybe they should get a real job instead of being a parasite on workers

Think how backwards this thinking it’s. pay rent or be evicted. Part of a landlords compensation package is their place to stay.

aaa_ames 🎻 This violin is to scale, and it’s playing just for her.

Here for the ratio and to remind everyone of the undeniable truth that ✨landlords cause the climate crisis✨

Wow, that's awful! We need to publicize all housing, abolish rentals and house both landlords and renters in public housing so this never happens again.

Boohoo

Why don’t they just get a job? They obviously should’ve managed their finances better. This whole article is garbage, do better

if even landlords can become homeless, maybe govt should take homelessness seriously or should landlords living in parks be aggressively evicted by cops and forced to live out of sight of wealthy ppl under bridges, like the city does w most other ppl

damn that’s craaaazy

fixed it

Has she considered pulling herself up by her bootstraps?

Hey , you know you 'could' do a daily story on the legislated poverty that disabled Canadians face at the hands of our government, or you could provide lip service to this crap.

She wasn't homeless, this is hot garbage.

New tactic to make the CBC pitchbot account meaningless

I would never rent to anyone. No protections.

L + ratio + landlord isn't a job

caregiverspilotprogram OurCommons JustinTrudeau CitImmCanada SeanFraserMP theJagmeetSingh NDP Ignoring Canadian Employers who waiting their caregivers since 2019, Insider still separated from spouse& children. Still no processing time given for this program.

This article completely fails to illustrate WHY the LTB is backlogged: - Eviction ban during height of COVID - Rise in number of evictions due to loss of income during COVID - Rise of renovictions (N13) - Rise in home sales in a hot housing market (N12) Maybe start there.

I’m pretty sure in Ontario, under the residential tenancies act (RTA). A landlord can’t just turf out a renter if they suddenly decide they need the unit for personal use. There’s a process. The LTB has to rule on it. It sounds like people aren’t clear on the rules.

Won't someone think of the parasites

Why didn't she find a place to rent instead of kicking the people out lol.

Womp womp, get a real job

I used to be a landlord...sold my properties and will never look back. Tenants refusing to leave happened long before the pandemic. FYI

This is criminal. It’s about time the government changes these laws!

Oh no! This is much worse than someone that doesn't own property being homeless!

So she tried to make someone else homeless and ended up homeless herself

She had to wait out a legal process that cost her money but ultimately worked and she moved back into her property. She wasn’t homeless. Was a misleading title 🙄🙄🙄

I don’t feel sorry for her….she owned two properties. She was evicting someone out of their only chance at a home. They’d lived there 4 years. C’mon CBC do you NOT see a problem with trying to draw up sympathy in this story.

Her height shouldn't have anything to do with it

Leave it to the CBC to focus on landlords 😂

They should call it the tenant board. Its all on the side of a bunch of losers that refuse to pay rent!

Welcome to the Native World of Canada

If it's so easy for tenants, why even try kicking the tenants out of her rental property rather than renting from somebody else? Clearly she knows her assertions are false.

What a pro-landlord piece of garbage article. Oh boo hoo. Cry me a river. I have no sympathy for anyone who owns 'investment' properties.

Anoter fordnation debacle!! Nothing ever done for the people of Ontario, ever!!

it feels possible CBC is trying to jokerify the public on purpose with this piece

CBCOttawa this is sh!t. she cld do what 000's of divorced people do - rent or buy something else. 'only place she could go was her rental' is utterly false. This story on top of 'poor landlord in Gatineau hasn't had rent in five months' is compounding the tone deafness of this outlet

Tenants should have rankings like a credit score, the higher risk you are the more you pay in rent.

stop posting landlord propaganda

We will see a lot more of this because of fordnation getting rid of rent controls causing rents to go up 34% annually since he took office.

'homeless'

Not gonna bother seeing if CBCPitchbot was tagged yet. Smh.

Problems like this 10 years ago stopped us from renting out a granny suite in our home. If they want more affordable housing in Ontario this is a good place to start. Overhauling these tenant friendly laws may encourage more home owners to offer up units.

Cut the utilities. Water, hydro, gas etc. No heat to cook, no water to bath or defecate.... live like swine, best to get treated like swine. What they going to do? Sue? Most if not all tenants like this are society scum anyways.

I guess she should get a job

No reason for the tenant to stop paying and trash the place. Getting them out is one thing, then go after them for unpaid rent and damage through small claims court - a paralegal or self-help if you can navigate the system.

i guess only the people who do all the work in society should be homeless and not the weirdos who own things and collect money from that ownership? seems backwards.

being a landlord shouldn't be a job. Plain and simple.

Landlord isn’t a real job, it’s exploitation.

who care

I blame the fact that most private or small landlords are renting a property that has a mortgage on it. Too much tosk of things going bad

Look what you’ve done . You’ve worked so hard to demonize landlords and now people can’t have the slightest bit of compassion for an every day senior who lost her life’s work.

Experts and organizations who work with landlords said they've seen dozens become homeless…even FORFEITING their properties to banks due to bankruptcy — all as they WAIT for the LTB to hear their case and make a final decision. Absolutely unacceptable of LTB. Outrageous.

Maybe they should get a job

Boo hoo for the landlord swimming in equity! Why don't renters just roll over and become homeless for their betters? Crocodile tears for landlords!

a small victory:

lmao fucking landlord apologia

It's time to outlaw the rentier class.

Ridiculous, insulting BS here. Poor unfortunate multiple property owner has to make choices about their Capital.

They say there a lot of jobs out there. Maybe Franchesca could go out and find a real one?

Yeah, if you define 'homeless' as having money from the sale of one house and owning a rental apartment. Not what normal people would call homeless

fuck landlords 🥰

I have great difficulty feeling sorry for anyone well off enough to own income properties.

Okay.. So she's upset she was homeless because she tried to make someone else homeless? It should be illegal to do this in the first place.. You want a rental property... Then that is what it is.. You don't get to screw everyone else so you get an easier go.. Wtf is with this?

We were left homeless with a horror show tenant. We made the decision to take long term rentals off the market and strictly do short term. NEVER again dealing with LTB. Terrible, unprofessional, rude and truly a screwed up process. The guy: “better you are homeless than tenant”

she tried to evict people during a Pandemic, are you supporting this ?

Us usual with these pro-landlord pieces. No mention of when they bought their secondary property, what it was worth then, and what it is worth now. A woe is me story about being owed $24k while owning an investment property that has likely gone up $400,000 in value in 5 years.

She should learn from Justin's caucus MP Taleeb who flipped 42 homes in 7 years. He don't even remember for how many of them he claimed principal residence tax exemption

yeah that sounds pretty stupid

Ontario should have fixed rental contracts - at the end, of the term, everything is up for negotiation. If people want to lock in lower rent, they can sign a fixed 10 year contract. As it is today, contracts are for perpetuity basically ...

how u gonna be a homeless landlord lmao sounds like she fucked up

She should have just gotten a real job

Quit blaming others for your problems

This is definitely a broken system for landlords.

Yeah, it's tough out there when you're living off someone else's income.

Lolololol

People whine about Airbnb and its issues…but I dont blame people one bit for not taking on long term tenants. Not worth the headache. It would be cheaper to change locks and dump their stuff in a bin…they can sue if they want, but they wont.

Was this article written by a landlord? Reporting LTB being biased towards tenants solely using a landlord lobby quote 👀 Maybe also ask tenants who don't own property, yet pay for the landlord's mortgages and bills, about their LTB experiences

Government housing policies today benefit only the rich. HousingCrisis

CBCOttawa Why is the CBC investing so much effort into landlord sob stories and nothing into absolute exploitation that is happening across the country for renters? People are subsidizing REITs and rich people's mortgages at 40-60% of their income. Its exploitation.

I generally struggle with landlords - there is a reason so many have terrible reputations. I feel sorry for this lady but surely she had some friends / family she could have stayed with? We had one in Saskatoon who was so bad / didn't care. Finally sold his crap places.🙂

At no point did they consider getting an actual job 🤔

Well, companies like Christie Ossington Center will take the house as a donation and keep it filled with people, usually not from the same hood though. It's like an eviction for Christie Ossington and thats how they make their money from the homeless.

Business risk.

The fact the tenant demanded the LTB hearing be conducted in French is a dead giveaway. This is a professional tenant who played the system so they could have a free home as long as possible.

Has she considered getting a job?

Disgusting landlord and tenant act. I would sue.

Sorry that happened. once a homeowner. Kicking my ass for selling in 2019. Renting after 30 years. Rent dropped in this mid town building. Asked reduction, nope. I pay every month, very clean, respectful. Over charging , because you can is stupid.4 empty units, plus mine soon.

Landlord: Those people were paying all my bills for that house and some - then when MY life went to shit, at no fault of theirs, I wanted my house back and them to be homeless, not me! Then instead of helping them leave. I took them to court and got mad when they stopped paying.

That's various levels of government trying to solve problems (i.e. housing inequities) of their own creation on the backs of the people that actually pay their taxes and contribute to society. Size the country and economy to what it can support over what we imagine it to be.

I agree CBC! The renter couple (one of whom is disabled) should've been the ones to be homeless instead! That seems like the only just solution here! /s

CBCPitchbot

A plan was put in place to stop evictions during the pandemic. Also, you’re not a small landlord if you own more than two rentals.

We have had to move twice in a year because our landlords sold the house/apartment we live in so

Let me get this straight. You’re confused why her tenant didn’t agree to be homeless instead of her because that’s the preferred/acceptable outcome. This is ridiculous and pathetic CBC

Maybe housing should be a human right and then everyone would be happy

So who is going to bear the losses here, somebody needs to be responsible?

These white supremacists should know that the lesbians that run BLM are the only ones allowed to succeed in the housing market.

If you own more than 2 properties you aren’t a small landlord. Housing should be a right. Renters needs to pay their rent but this is proof that things aren’t working the way they are. Just my opinion

oh cool, CBC is carrying water for conservative issues now...
