Former president Jacob Zuma gestures to his supporters outside the Pietermaritzburg High Court following an application for a permanent stay of prosecution on 20 May 2019.With days to go before the start of Jacob Zuma's trial, his lawyers have written to prosecutions boss Shamila Batohi to demand she remove advocate Billy Downer as his lead corruption prosecutor.
In a seven-page letter sent to Batohi eight days before the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed Zuma's latest attempts to force Downer's removal through a so-called special plea, Ntanga Nkuhlu Inc Attorneys complain the prosecutor"has steadfastly failed and/or refused to step down despite numerous requests and demands for him to do so".
