Redistricting has been the latest political controversy in the fractured San Dieguito school district

The San Diego County Board of Education is taking over the redistricting process for the San Dieguito Union High School District after San Dieguito allegedly failed to follow state transparency laws as it was approving its redistricting map.

Community members Carol Chang and Lisa Montes sued the board five days after it approved the map, alleging that it constituted political gerrymandering to favor the conservative board members. They also claimed the map fractured Latino and Asian communities and diluted their voting power. Conservative members have denied this, saying the map doesn’t decrease racial minorities’ voting power, and that the map changed voting boundaries in order to keep coastal and inland communities together.

San Dieguito Union High School Board President Maureen “Mo” Muir, who is one of the conservative board members, denied the allegations and said the board did not violate the Brown Act.
