Court Frees Ex-NNPC GMD of Money Laundering Charge via thisdaylive

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court Thursday freed a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation , Mr Andrew Yakubu, of money laundering charges.

Yakubu was dragged to court by the federal government after huge sums of hard currencies were found in a safe in his Kaduna residence. The commission, a month later , slammed a six-count charge bordering on money laundering and false declaration of assets against him. However, after the prosecution closed its case against the defendant, Yakubu entered a no-case submission, claiming that the prosecution failed to prove the ingredients of the charge.

In their ruling however, the appellate court struck out two of the four counts and ordered him to open his defence in the remaining two. He explained that he decided to keep the monies in his house pending when he decides to open a business venture of his choice. According to the judge, it is one thing to find money in a person’s house and another to prove that the money was received all at once. The judge added that the EFCC did not do a good job in its investigation.
