Dick Durbin is a patient senator. And his restraint will be tested during this week’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
During an interview in his Capitol suite, Durbin described lockstep Republican attempts to disqualify Jackson as the “enduring obstacle” he’s gearing up for during four grueling days of hearings. He’s had some time to prepare; at age 77, the Illinoisan has served more than 17 years as the No. 2 Senate Democrat and waited close to 40 years in Congress before becoming a full committee chair.
Now there are signs things could get ugly as Republicans hone in on Jackson’s record on child porn sentencing and her representation of detainees held on terrorism-related charges at Guantanamo Bay. The White House is forcefully defending her sentencing record, noting that it’s in line with other federal judges, and touting endorsements from law enforcement groups and survivors of crimes.
Most Republicans on the Judiciary Committee say they get along with Durbin despite his progressive record. Even so, they complain about Jackson’s quick confirmation schedule and Durbin spurning document requests related to her tenure on the U.S. Sentencing Commission. “The focus of this is to get her confirmed, and that’s the priority,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse , Durbin’s onetime rival for the Judiciary gavel. ”Not to have this devolve into a shouting match about Joe Biden’s toughness on crime.”
I'm very happy and I feel like I am the only enjoying this although there are still people testifying about this platform, it proved me wrong. It's more than a dream come though creating multiple incomes, truly proud of the decision I made getting started with Dennismayson9
Durbin opposed Alberto Gonzales’ nomination as US Attorney General. He opposed Condoleeza Rice’s nomination as Secretary of State. He opposed Janice Rogers-Brown’s nomination to the D.C. Court of Appeals. And, he opposed Miguel Estrada’s nomination “because he is Latino.”
Dick Durbin has a long, sordid history of opposing minority nominees. Most egregiously, he opposed Miguel Estrada, specifically, “because he is Latino.”
Look at the state of the world it’s time for women and people of color to save it.
