The Northern Territory’s police union believes the inquest into the shooting death of Kumanjayi Walker will expose serious case mismanagement by the panicked top brass, which it accuses of charging Constable Zachary Rolfe before senior officers had even finished investigating.
“The Northern Territory Police Association has waited for more than two years to have our voice heard regarding the circumstances leading up to the charging of Constable Zach Rolfe,” president Paul McCue said on Sunday. NT Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker, reading from a statement on Friday and taking no questions from the media, said the force would “not continue, as others have, to proffer opinion and views in the absence of facts”.Crown prosecutor Philip Strickland, SC, said the Australian people deserved full scrutiny of the matter when it reached the inquest.
. Nor did it examine staffing levels at remote stations, or the broader allocation of police resources. Mr Walker’s family feel bereft over the verdict. They have called for an end to guns in remote communities andZachary Rolfe with then-Governor-General Peter Cosgrove in early 2019 after the officer’s 2016 river rescue effort.
