Couples struggling with infertility and their advocates are pushing for a change in Canadian legislation to decriminalize the purchase of human eggs for reproductive purposes.

Shannon and Shawn Tiffin started trying to conceive eight years ago. However, Shannon was told by her doctor early on that she would not be able to get pregnant.

However, donating eggs in an invasive procedure that comes with some risks, so finding a donor can be difficult.They were willing to pay, but in Canada, buying human eggs is considered a criminal offence.The issue was recently featured in a documentary called "The Secret Society" in an effort to shine light on the "secretive, complex and criminalized world of assisted reproduction in Canada.

Miville-Dechene said a major concern for some is that decriminalization could lead to the exploitation of vulnerable women. "People who support compensation, which I am one, say that you’re not being paid for the gamete, you’re being paid for the health risks," he explained to CTV National News.
