Private text messages from West Australian Premier Mark McGowan have revealed what he really thinks of mining magnate Clive Palmer.

Mr McGowan and the mining magnate are suing each other for defamation in the Federal Court in NSW, where evidence has been heard about their legal fight over the WA hard border, a stalled iron ore project, arbitration and legislation that blocked Mr Palmer’s ability to claim almost $30bn in damages.

Mr McGowan disagreed with the proposition that he had been sneaky, underhanded and dishonourable by not letting people know about the unprecedented legislation until the last minute and “ramming” it through parliament. Turning to public comments made by Mr Quigley about the legislation, Mr Gray noted he had likened the situation to a boxing match.

“I think he was indicating that he and I were somehow quite clever in regards to this. I think that would be the implication,” Mr McGowan added. Mr Gray pointed to confidentiality clauses surrounding the mediation process, including the amount in damages being sought by Mr Palmer. Mr Quigley told the court he was being “silly” and “foolish” when he used the boxing analogy on the radio.

Earlier during the Premier’s cross-examination on Wednesday, the court was told that after Mr McGowan publicly described the Queenslander as an “enemy of the state”, Mr Palmer’s legal team wrote to the Premier. Asked whether he believed he could ignore the concerns from Mr Palmer’s lawyer, the Premier replied: “Yes.”When Clive Palmer gave evidence in the trial he stayed on-board his luxury yacht in Sydney Harbour. Picture: NCA NewsWire/Dylan Coker“Mr Palmer was such a dangerous, threatening figure that the state had to put itself on a war footing?” Mr Gray asked.Mr McGowan said it was also because he was aware of the $30bn damages claim, even though it was not public knowledge at the time.

Texts between WA Premier and media mogul aired during Clive Palmer defamation trialText messages between the WA Premier and the owner of the state's only daily metro newspaper are revealed as Mark McGowan takes the stand for the second day in the high-profile defamation trial against businessman Clive Palmer. Quite disturbing to see that the WA premier and the owner of the only newspaper in town are in each others pockets 🤢 Mature people go for a drink and sort out the problem. Rich arrogant people pay their lawyers to battle it out over months in court. There’s something very sad about this. Palmer was trying to bankrupt the state of WA, a friend of the state would never do that, so logically that would make him an enemy.
