Mayor Lori Lightfoot is named in a defamation lawsuit filed by George Smyrniotis, which alleges she used vulgar language over the Columbus statue.

CHICAGO -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot is now a defendant in a defamation lawsuit, which alleges she used language in a meeting with Chicago Park District lawyers that ABC 7 cannot repeat on-air.

Onesti said after the Christopher Columbus statue was taken down in Arrigo Park in 2020, the organization wanted to use it in the 2021 Columbus Day Parade and was working with park district lawyers to make it happen. The plaintiff in this case is George Smyrniotis. His lawyer says they will not talk publicly because, he says, the complaint speaks for itself.
