What does UC Berkeley's enrollment cap mean for other campuses? Some say it opens the door for other communities to sue campuses for their enrollment growth through the 1970 environmental quality act

Ludwig's Fountain and the Golden Bear Cafe at the University of California, Berkeley campus on February 3, 2022. Thalia Juarez for CalMattersThe California Supreme Court agreed with a lower court’s order that UC Berkeley cap its enrollment, meaning 3,000 admitted students will almost certainly need to seek education elsewhere. This outcome is the result of a lawsuit based on the California Environmental Quality Act.

The basis of that suit and court decisions, the 1970 California Environmental Quality Act, centers anew the state’s marquee environmental protection law as either a source of ire for backers of urban density and housing developers or as a chief weapon to preserve communities and the surrounding environment.

Echoing Justice Liu’s dissent, he said that Save Berkeley’s Neighborhoods look forward to meeting with the president of the UC system “to get the settlement process started.” UC Berkeley said it will attempt to enroll some of the excluded 3,000 students by increasing online enrollment and asking some students to delay enrollment to the university until spring term of 2023. Campus enrollment typically goes down some in the spring. “We will also prioritize California residents for fall in-person undergraduate enrollment, as well as our commitment to transfer students,” a campus statement said.

Still, today’s court decision wasn’t about the full merits of the case but was instead about Seligman’s decision to cap enrollment. A state court of appeals is expected to hear the full case later this year.

UC Berkeley Ordered to Freeze Enrollment for Incoming ClassUC Berkeley was ordered by California’s Supreme Court to freeze its undergraduate enrollment at 2020-21 levels, meaning it will have to accept at least 3,000 fewer students than planned for the upcoming academic year. This is either some pretty lazy reporting or just a shill for the UC Regents. The issue is UC doesn’t provide enough housing for its students, forcing cities and counties to pay for housing these students. It’s not about the poor students. UC needs to build housing. Period.

I guess this is good. However, doesn't seem like 3000 less students in the city cures an ongoing issue. Do these same residents have any additional solutions? This is sad for local students who will suffer. They will accept more out of state and foreign students bc they pay more in tuition. Berkeley is a college city, those residents know that. Wowowowowow
