. He was speaking during a United Nations’ special emergency session to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Guterres says the UN is now working 24 hours, seven days a week to scale up the delivery of life saving support to people desperate for protection and shelter. “Tomorrow, we will launch two coordinated emergency appeals for Ukraine and the region. We understand there is escalating of the humanitarian needs inside the country, including rising internal displacements and other response to the need of the people crossing international borders to seek refuge in countries neighbouring Ukraine.

Guterres has also expressed shock and concern on Russia’s ordering its military commanders to put the country’s strategic nuclear forces on special alert. “We are facing a tragedy for Ukraine, but also a major regional crisis with potentially disastrous implications for us all. Yesterday, Russia Nuclear forces were put on high alert. This is a chilling development. The mere idea of nuclear conflict is simply inconceivable. Nothing can justify the use of nuclear weapons,” says Guterres added.
