American law treats all animals as “things”—the same category as rocks or roller skates. A curious legal crusade could change that, lawrence_wright writes.

,” found evidence that Verner had kidnapped Benga from his village when he was thirteen—meaning that he would have been fifteen, not twenty-three, when he was displayed at the Bronx Zoo. Benga despaired of ever returning to Africa, and on March 20, 1916, he shot himself in the heart. A hundred and four years later, the Wildlife Conservation Society apologized for its “role in promoting racial injustice,” and acknowledged that Benga had been “robbed of his humanity.

The state of New York is home to nearly a million and a half cows, eighty thousand sheep, and more than sixty thousand hogs. Milk is the state’s largest agricultural commodity. “Should the Pandora’s Box of habeas corpus be opened on behalf of animals, New York’s multibillion-dollar agricultural industry would be at risk,” the property holders warned, and that prospect might lead farmers and businesses to flee the state for “more friendly confines and jurisdictions.

The veterinarians noted that the NhRP had been raising money based on the Happy case. If the lawsuit succeeded, other groups “would vie to ‘represent’ animals in zoos, aquariums, and other facilities in an effort to sustain their organizations,” even though “none of them would truly be speaking for those animals.”

I asked him if animal-welfare laws provided sufficient protection. “Probably not,” he said. “But there are countless ways of strengthening them without, say, granting personhood to chickens. It seems more rhetorical than morally sound to take a concept that was designed for us in the first place and try to shoehorn very different species in.” He added, “If our concern is reducing the avoidable suffering of other species, let’s just minimize the suffering.

… what?

I guess for a start the agencies could give them credit ratings, so over time we’d probably see more ads targeting elephants and whales.

Deep thoughts by jack handy Sanchez: “Food for thought: If we consider that some Mexican politicians fall in that same category: should they be granted the rights of personhood? how would our country and relationship to them change?”

here are my naked photos

We should be on our knees, apologizing to them. Then immediately close all animal Ag facilities, ban the use of animals in entertainment venues where they die. And set about freeing captive wild animals while expanding/protecting their ancestral lands. That's day 1. . .

Freelolita MiamiSeaquarium

OrcaSOS Poor things, we might treat them with as much ‘benign’ neglect as we treat each other.

We are still racist to our own kind. Imagine what that would be to non primates.

It's important that our culture encompasses compassion. The exploitation and abuse of animals (both human and non-human) is commonplace, so much so, that people barely notice. We can change this. Creating protective laws providing basic rights are a leap in the right direction.

But yet embryos are inhuman… please the ridiculousness of these assertions keep getting more ridiculous

NonhumanRights That would depend on if they accepted our apologies or not.

ok, but all animals while we are here

Re: the Crossword: it’s The Bicycle Thief, not Thieves. 🙄

TIL About Happy the elephant, and movements to protect the welfare of “non human” person like animals such as dolphins and octopods.

Save this sweet soul

I suppose I could stop eating elephant.

We could tax them

Love. Love to see how we collectively learn compassion... fascinating really. This may be the only way these creatures are able to travel off World someday... this is perfect beginning 🥧❤️📧

I have learned , that animals think often in pictures. And we are able to comunicate over pictures with them. They often like, when we have tender thoughts abought them. A Lady, who had fear from a dog, did it, and than the dog made friendship with her.

Elephants would have their tusks ripped out and then would be compelled to buy ivory items they don't need

Remember, the head of the NRA and his wife, hunted/killed/murdered those African Elephants. They must both be prosecuted

Then they can't be hunted/killed/murdered, same for Dolphins

Respecting and protecting all sentient life seems prudent

We'd probably hurt them more

I doubt they’d be Republicans.

bagi aku pengunduran waktu pemilihan umum.... sama dengan penambahan waktu penyiksaan.... sampai bumi ini kiamat....

I'm always worried about these definitions, because we have people now that are neither capable of conforming to complex society nor are aware of themselves as individuals.

dari dulu mereka tak pernah tepati janji....

They’d be subject to the same laws and norms as the rest of us for one thing. That means taxation. Jail time and fines for transgressions like trespassing. Lawsuits for property damage.

No. They are better than people. Their rights should be analogous to children’s rights

I think we should be able to deduct the high cost of veterinary care on our taxes.

People are animals. The beings you're calling animals are 'non-human animals.' Get your heads right.

If I recall, the original child abuse cases were based on mistreatment of dogs.

Should people as Trump, Biden, Putin, MBS, Erdogan, Modi, Al Sisì, Draghi, Macron, Johnson, etc. be considered humans?

I have thoughts! 🐘

Sentient beings?
