PUBLISHED 8:58 AM EST Feb. 25, 2022President Joe Biden is set to nominate federal Appeals Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, a person familiar with the matterIf confirmed, she would make history as the first Black woman ever to serve on the high court.
“The person I will nominate will be someone of extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity, and that person will be the first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court,” Biden said last month. “It's long overdue, in my view. I made that commitment during the campaign for president. I will keep that commitment.”
Jackson was appointed last year by Biden to the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia, a court considered a springboard to the Supreme Court. She, with three Republicans – Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., supporting her confirmation earlier this year.
Shortly after Breyer officially announced his retirement, Biden said intended to announce his pick before the end of February, adding he will ask the Senate to “promptly” begin Senate confirmation proceedings afterward. Once the nomination is sent to the Senate, it is up to the Senate Judiciary Committee to vet the nominee and hold confirmation hearings. After the committee approves a nomination, it goes to the Senate floor for a final vote.
