Destitute Persons Act still under review, Social Welfare Dept says

Social Welfare Department deputy director-general Rosmahwati Ishak says the government is due to review the Destitute Persons Act, primarily to tighten restrictions on begging and allow the authorities to take action. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, February 19, 2022.

THE decision on whether to formulate a new law or improve the Destitute Persons Act 1977 to tackle the issue of beggars can only be made after the review of the act is completed next year. Social Welfare Department deputy director-general Rosmahwati Ishak said the review, to begin in July, is expected to be completed in September 2023.
