What was once an unattainable dream has become a daily workable reality for a lawyer who splits his time between country Victoria and Melbourne.

“I’m 47, and the prospect of living here permanently was still 15 or 20 years away because being a partner in a law in the middle of the CBD in Melbourne, that never seemed workable,” Mr O’Halloran said.“But obviously with the lockdown in March 2020 the ability to live here immediately became a reality.

“I’m still here today doing work for national publicly listed companies. It’s all doable and a very pleasant way to work through the day with busy and stressful work.” CoreLogic now suggests regional Australian markets such as Beechworth could be at a turning point as COVID-19 recedes, raising the possibility that employers will demand employees return full-time, slowing or killing regional migration.“There’s a lot of talk about ‘the Great Resignation’ at the moment and I think that one benefit employees want more than money, certainly for myself, is flexibility in terms of where and when you do work,” he said.

“Attraction and retention of employees for employers is going to require that they focus on people who want to have a different lifestyle than they had before.”
