The president on Thursday said background checks have been done on “about four” potential nominees as he inches closer to fulfilling his campaign promise of appointing a Black woman to the nation’s highest court.

Judges J. Michelle Childs, Leondra Kruger and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

At a meeting with Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee later Thursday, Biden reportedly said he plans to start interviewing potential nominees next week. According to the Post, Biden told the group that the interviews will start after he spends the weekend continuing to review their records. When 83-year-old liberal Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement from the Supreme Court late last month, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to nominate the first Black woman to the high court — and said he hoped to select a nominee before the end of February.“I think whomever I pick will get a vote from the Republican side for the following reason: I’m not looking to make an ideological choice here,” Biden said.

Any Republican votes for Biden’s pick would help relieve the pressure on Democrats of having to secure every one of their votes in the 50-50 chamber. Several GOP senators — including Lindsey Graham, Mitt Romney, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski — have expressed openness to voting for a Biden nominee., a U.S. District Court judge from Graham’s home state of South Carolina.

“I can’t think of a better person for President Biden to consider for the Supreme Court than Michelle Childs,” Graham said. “She has wide support in our state. She is considered to be a fair-minded, highly gifted jurist. She’s one of the most decent people I’ve ever met.”

Progressives Double Down on Opposition to Clyburn's Anti-Labor SCOTUS ChoiceJudge J. Michelle Childs' history of harsh criminal justice rulings contrast sharply with the background of another potential nominee, former public defender Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. BernieSanders I personally prefer Sifill_LDF for the SCOTUS nomination. But Ketanji Brown Jackson would also be an excellent choice. I don’t particularly care for another ‘tough on crime’ SCOTUS, there’s already too much of the draconian jurist mindset on SCOTUS. The SC needs balance.
