Tunisian judges shout slogans against the dissolution of the Supreme Judicial Council by the Tunisian president, during a protest in Tunis on February 10, 2022. – President Kais Saied on the weekend moved to scrap the CSM, accusing it of blocking politically sensitive investigations and being influenced by his nemesis, the Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party.
At the rally in central Tunis on Thursday, police looked on as protesters chanted “restore the CSM” and “the people want an independent judiciary”. Saied had long accused the CSM of blocking politically sensitive investigations and being influenced by his nemesis, the Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party.
Saied, who late last year gave himself powers to issue legislation, said Thursday that he planned to issue orders in the coming days formally disbanding the CSM.“Justice is a job, not a branch of government. All judges are answerable to the law.”On Wednesday, a group of 45 civil society groups had issued a statement rejecting “any interference by the executive authority in the judiciary’s work”.
