America launched the War on Drugs more than 50 years ago. Drugs are winning.

America’s longest war isn’t the 20-year fight in Afghanistan. That struggle is dwarfed by the War on Drugs, started by President Richard Nixon more than 50 years ago and still raging.

The drug war—which has relied on both law enforcement and the military, at a cost of untold lives and hundreds of billions of dollars—has fared little better than the Afghan campaign. Since Nixon’s declaration of war in 1971, drug use has soared in the U.S. and globally, the range and potency of available drugs has expanded and the power of criminal narcotics gangs has exploded.

I think you are wrong, the longest war was not Afghanistan, or 'the war on drugs' (that is corrupted by the open southern border and used by drug cartels), it is the 'War on Poverty' that was used for politics instead of helping the poor!!!

lost both

There was never a war on drugs! Just a simple strategy to give the government an excuse to incarcerate certain people that have NOTHING to do with the flow of drugs into this country

If you follow the WSJ-logic, countries would have to intervene militarily in others, in order to have a monopoly on narcotics production areas, from Coke to poppy. So instead of the supposed war on terrorism (which is generic) we would be fighting to make the West a legal narco

As one Adm official told me ( the authors never bothered contacting) “we ( Nixon adm ) knocked the hell out of the heroin problem.” The combo of enforcement and treatment was revolutionary. 2/3

Duh

You've been saying this for so long. Legalization for harm reduction is the same as the proposal for penal reform and 'attacking the causes' of criminality; it has no practical effect, because a scarecrow. Holland is a narco-state, its failure proves the result

The authors of this article are not well educated. Emails to several officials directly involved with this could have prevented these errors. (DuPont, Shepard ). The Nixon adm focused on treatment as well as enforcement -see methadone clinics. We spent lavishly on treatment. 1/3

Just stop doing drugs?

Why not address what makes Americans so miserable that they'd rather do drugs

Ask our great leader about this, Trudeau strikes me as this kind of person:

Yeah cause the federal government keeps spending money on unimportant stuff and not enough time and money on fixing Canada...all the federal government cares about are themselves.

...perhaps it was viewed as only “a small incursion”...

We spend enormous amounts of resources trying to keep drugs out. The users spend enormous amounts of money to get them. The money goes to the cartels so they can send more drugs. Legalizing 'safe' drugs would kill two birds. Or we can just carry on as usual.

Is it drugs winning or the American pple's appetite for drugs gaining an upper hand.

😞

War on drugs meant war on other Drug Dealers.

IMO, people have too much time on their hand, don't know how to deal with life's problems, don't think they could become addicted, thinks it's fun, just plain stupidity or all of the above. Those who abuse drugs needs to be convinced that abusing drugs is not the solution.

So let’s legalize it all and see it how it goes. Our cities are already resembling scenes from the bars in Star Wars so I can’t wait to see how it works out

It was not a war 'against' but 'for'. It was a strategic survey to streamline the supply chain across the globe by increasing the influence while delivering the awareness about drugs. Exemplary policy by the Respected Duterte in the Philippines was enough to cut it by the roots

& been whopping our asses ever since

It is expected. Countries that have made progress have approached drugs more from the perspective of public health than criminal justice, especially when it comes to individual users. But the World's top jailer has this warped up belief that being 'tough on crime' solve things.

Drugs work. America does not.

힘든 싸움 입니다 마약은 인간의 정신을 파고듭니다 갱단의 폭력과 살인 그리고 여성 착취가 아직도 세계를 압박합니다

you mean it funded drugs 50 years ago riiii 🤣

There never was a 'war' on drugs. There was a war on minorities and lower class to lock them up and funnel more tax dollars to the rich. Look up the majority shareholders of private prisons and companies that supply private and public prisons.

say no to drugs!

But they're going to arrive at zero carbon.

'War on drugs' isn't to get rid of them, think of it like this, War on Drugs INC.

Here's an idea. Don't use drugs.

Dude, it's drugs. Of course they're winning. Now, connect the dots and demand immediate legalization. Do the right thing. I dare you.

Well, TBF, drugs had a running start and the WoDrugs is run by the government.

I think it’s in a lot of private business interest to keep a failed war on drugs going. Their milking every penny they can get off is for it. Our laws in drugs ruin more lives than the actual drugs do.

The war on drugs can only be won by involving the stakeholders. Trust me on this.

And drugs will keep winning with the border wide open for the cartels etc to continue to flood into the US.

Winning? What would the outcomes be under your alternative scenarios?

When’s the last time America won a war?

Portugal will teach you how to deal with it...

To complete WSJ half story, CIA and drug cartels are good friends for decades.

AlyAdybBear maybe calling it a war against drugs is an indication that the wrong thought process was at work?

We r loosing the war so much money to be made I hate them they ruin so many lives

Wait until you hear about the war on journalism. It's crazy. Ask your boss.

Stop it, it’s not working and won’t work in the future.

War on drugs but no war on poverty. Oh the shame.
