A diagnosed liar and con-artist who has been charged 99 times in Australia has an ‘uncontrollable’ urge, a court has been told.

This time, the 32-year-old had posed as a child trapped in a cult and reported a made-up sexual assault to a youth case worker and a doctor, who were both legally bound to tell child services.Samantha Azzopardi is a pathological liar – a condition medically known as pseudologia fantastica – according to mental health practitioners.

She was granted bail just before Christmas – despite police opposition – to live with her father in Douglas Park in Sydney after her lawyer Carolyn Shiels told the court the options were to either treat her mental health disorder or “lock her up and throw away the key”. Attached to a police file tendered to the court was a sheet with the title “Aliases”, under which there were about 75 names and variations of names.

Mr Ellis said people who develop problems with their personality often experience repeated traumatic events in their childhood or a failure to be provided with ordinary parenting. He added pathological lying itself remained largely a mystery to mental health practitioners, as people with the condition don’t see it as a problem for themselves and often only present to clinicians when they get into trouble.

In October 2019, Azzopardi contacted a French couple on Facebook and told them she was an 18-year-old au pair, and soon moved into their home. She also posed as an au-pair for basketball star Tom Jervis and his wife Jazze, telling them she was 17 years-old and came from a rich American family. In Dublin and Canada in 2013 and 2014, Azzopardi pretended to be a victim of sexual assault, abduction and sex trafficking, and Irish authorities even spent $400,000 on the investigation.Ms Azzopardi contacted a Youth off the Streets employee and told her she was part of a cult named “Institute of Basic Life Principals”.

A few days later, Ms Azzopardi and the youth worker were asked by detectives to come down to the station to make a statement, but moments before arriving at the police station she changed her mind. But on the morning of November 29, Azzopardi went to the emergency department at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
