Pakistan has its first woman on the Supreme Court – so, who is Ayesha Malik?

Key points:She passed a landmark ruling in the High Court in 2021 barring 'virginity tests' in rape casesJustice Ayesha Malik has now been officially confirmed as a judge in the South Asian nation's top court, but lawyers and even other judges have questioned her seniority and eligibility for the post.

Early last year, she made international headlines for banning the controversial "two-finger test" that was used to determine a woman's level of sexual activity when investigating rape cases.Justice Malik said the tests were "humiliating" and had "no forensic value". Also a member of the International Association of Women Judges, Justice Malik regularly speaks about issues that women face in public life in Pakistan.Although it is historic, her elevation to the Supreme Court has been divisive.
