Enfranchising youth the Canadian thing to do

The inconsistencies in age-based responsibilities are unfair. Young people are allowed to do many things that have broader implications on our community and country, but the government still denies young people the right to vote in our democratic elections, writes Diego Christiansen-Barker.Why do I want to lower the voting age? Because I value being Canadian.

To me, that means upholding the values of freedom in all its forms. Working to lower the voting age and give more people a voice is how I am trying to do just that. I started fighting to lower the voting age more than two years ago because I wanted to become more politically engaged and learn how to use my voice. Today I want to lower the voting age because the voice of youth is still unfairly and unconstitutionally restricted.Enjoy unlimited website access and the digital newspaper.

We could channel the energy and idealism of young people toward their personal intellectual, emotional and social growth while contributing meaningfully to Canada, while sorting out those existential quandaries. A win-win” for us all.
