LANGKAWI: A large group of motorcyclists who wanted to usher in the new year in a motorcycle convoy could not outride the long arm of the law.

A total of 473 of them were issued police summonses for 606 traffic offences at Dermaga Tanjung Lembung Port in Bukit Malut here.

Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari said a total of 1,200 motorcyclists were screened during a joint operation with the Road Transport Department on Thursday ."They reached the Tanjung Lembung jetty via three ferry services from Kuala Perlis at 5pm, 9pm and 11pm. Upon inspection, a total of 473 motorcyclists were issued summonses, with the majority of them not having vehicle registration numbers and side mirrors," he said.

"During the same operation, the JPJ also issued 104 notices to motorcyclists for various offences. A motorcycle was also seized. Another motorcyclist even replaced his registration number with 'Langkawi Attack #JB_MARI'," ACP Shariman added when speaking to Astro Awani. He said all the motorcyclists were told to abide by traffic regulations during their stay on the island.
